Bachelor of Technology (B. Tech) program-2025 -2026

The Bachelor of Technology (B. Tech) is a new undergraduate program at IISc in Mathematics and Computing that seeks to enter a niche area with the aim of producing future leaders, who will be at the forefront of research, development, and innovation in futuristic disciplines and next generation technologies that require deep use of mathematics, computer science, and data science. The program leverages the unmatched expertise available across the institute in achieving this goal.   

The program hopes to attract some of the best young minds across the nation, qualifying through the JEE Advanced examination. Students from this program will be sought after as graduate students across the globe.

► Eligibility:  

All International Candidates, who are foreign Nationals, holding a foreign passport, are eligible to apply. 

1. OCI/PIO candidates are divided into three categories:

  • OCI/PIO (I): Candidates who obtained their OCI/PIO card before 04.03.2021 and choose to be treated at par with Indian nationals will be considered under the unreserved (open) category.
  • OCI/PIO (F): Candidates who obtained their OCI/PIO card before 04.03.2021 but choose to apply as foreign nationals will also be considered under the foreign national category.
  • OCI/PIO (F): Candidates who obtained their OCI/PIO card after 04.03.2021 will be considered as foreign nationals and can only apply for foreign national supernumerary seats.

2. The candidates should have appeared for the class XII (or equivalent) examination for the first time in either 2023,2024 or 2025, where Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics are compulsory subjects in the first appearance. In addition, they must satisfy at least one of the following;

Must be within the category-wise top 20 percentile of successful candidates in their respective Class XII (or equivalent) board examination.

The marks scored in the following five subjects will be considered for calculating the aggregate and cut-off marks for fulfilling the top 20 percentile criterion.

i. Physics

ii. Chemistry

iii. Mathematics

iv. A language (if the candidate has taken more than one language, then

the language with the higher marks will be considered)

v. Any subject other than the above four (the subject with the highest marks will be considered).

► Selection: 

Shortlisting of the foreign and OCI/PIO (F) candidates desirous of applying to the Bachelor of Technology (B. Tech) in Mathematics and Computing Programme must take the national examination “JEE Advance-2025“. Please note that the candidate must be qualified in the JEE-Adv, and the exam result must be valid as on 01 August 2025. 

► Procedure for Applying: 

  • Application Form (available only online): The online application may be prepared and submitted by accessing the link: https://admissions.iisc.ac.in/international/web/SelectUGPG.aspxh from 01 May 2025 to 06 June 2025.  
  • There is no application fees. 
  • You are required to have the following scanned/digital copies for completing the application form. 
  • Scanned copy of Passport size Photograph (size less than 2 MB in an image format) 
  • Clear Scanned copy of photograph page of passport with details like passport number and nationality clearly spelled out (PDF or image), size less than 10 MB. 
  • OCI card clearly mentioning the acquiring date, if applicable.
  • You will also require the details of entrance exam (as given in above section) either appeared or appearing.

► Fee structure: 

 International and OCI/PIO (F) category students need to pay their annual fees (in INR) as per the fee structure and schedule for the General category students:  

Amount to be paid in the first year: 3,00,200 

Amount to be paid in years 2-4: 2,65,200 

Amount to be paid in years 4-5: 2,65,200

► FAQ’s: UNDERGRADUATE PROGRAM 

1.What is the name of the degree that will be offered under B.Tech. Mathematics and Computing? 

The degree will be called Bachelor of Technology in Mathematics and Computing. 

2. What is the duration of the B.Tech. program? 

The duration of the program is four years organized into eight semesters. 

3.What are the different modes of applying to the programme? 

Candidates must apply on-line. Online application may be prepared and submitted by accessing IISc-OIR website: http://oir.iisc.ac.in . Please refer to the Instruction manual for Application at this document. 

4. Which are the entry channels for admission to the B.Tech. program?

 Admission to the program will be based only on ranks obtained in the JEE Advanced examination. In addition, an applicant must have cleared class XII or equivalent from a recognized board with the following subjects: Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, a language, and any subject other than the above four. 

5. What is the cut-off score for JEE Advanced to get the admissions in UG Program at IISc? 

There is no set cut offs. The cut off scores for qualifying exam at IISc varies every year, depending upon various factors like availability of seats, reserve categories, number of candidates applied etc. The cut off lists are made available online (generally released after all qualifying exams declare their result) on IISc website. 

6.Is there an application fee for applying? 

There is no application fee for International Students. 

7Is there an NRI quota? 

No, there is no NRI quota for admissions at IISc. For OCI card holder, kindly refer to the eligibility section. 

8. Are OCI candidates considered as international students? 

OCI/PIO candidates are divided into three categories:

  • OCI/PIO (I): Candidates who obtained their OCI/PIO card before 04.03.2021 and choose to be treated at par with Indian nationals will be considered under the unreserved (open) category.
  • OCI/PIO (F): Candidates who obtained their OCI/PIO card before 04.03.2021 but choose to apply as foreign nationals will also be considered under the foreign national category.
  • OCI/PIO (F): Candidates who obtained their OCI/PIO card after 04.03.2021 will be considered as foreign nationals and can only apply for foreign national supernumerary seats.

9. What are the admission criteria for OCI/PIO (F) candidates ?

OCI/PIO (F) candidates are treated as foreign nationals and must meet the eligibility criteria for foreign applicants. They can apply only for foreign national supernumerary seats through the international student admission portal.

10. What are the admission criteria for OCI/PIO (I) candidates?

OCI/PIO (I) candidates are treated at par with Indian nationals. They must meet the eligibility criteria for Indian students and apply through the regular admission portal (for Indian applicants). However, they will be considered only under unreserved (open) category seats and are not eligible for reservations under EWS, OBC-NCL, SC, or ST categories.

11. Can an OCI/PIO candidate who have obtained their OC/PIO Cards before 04.03.2021, apply in both categories OCI/PIO(F) and OCI/PIO(I)?

No. OCI/PIO candidates who have obtained their OCI/PIO cards before 04.03.2021 have the option to apply EITHER as (a) foreign nationals OR (b) at par with Indian nationals. Candidates need to exercise this option carefully. In the event it is discovered that an OCI/PIO candidate has also applied as OCI/PIO (F) and OCI/PIO(I), then such cases shall be treated as a use of unfair means, and the
candidature shall be summarily cancelled.

12. How should OCI/PIO candidate apply?

OCI/PIO (F) candidates (foreign nationals) must apply through the international student admission portal.
OCI/PIO (I) candidates (treated as Indian nationals) must apply through the regular admission portal for Indian students.

15. Do you accept admission in B Tech from ICCR Scholarship portal? 

Ans: Currently, we do not have UG program admissions through ICCR. It may be available in future years, which will be updated here. 

16.What is the number of seats available for B Tech Program for OCI/International Students? 

Ans: Total no. of seats for international students is 4 that included OCI card holders.

18What are the unique features of the program?

 This is a modern program designed with the aim of producing future leaders, who will be at the forefront of research, development, and innovation in futuristic disciplines and next generation technologies that require deep use of mathematics, computer science, and data science. The core of the program spread over four semesters includes six courses each in Mathematics and Computing. Students can then choose softcore credits from a large pool of courses in Mathematics and Computing areas apart from many exciting electives from across the institute. To help students navigate through the large number of available courses and guide them towards specialization, study tracks have been designed in Mathematics, Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning, Computational Science, Theoretical Computer Science, Quantum Computing, Signal Processing, Computational Biology and Mathematical Finance. 

19. Does the institute provide any supernumerary Quota for female candidates for admission to the B.Tech. Mathematics and Computing?

Yes, a 20 % Supernumerary Quota over and above the approved intake for the program will be provided to female candidates. 

20. Will a candidate with outstanding performance in the above national examinations be automatically considered for admission even if he/she does not apply to the B.Tech. program in Mathematics and Computing?

No, only those candidates who apply for the B.Tech. program in Mathematics and Computing will be considered for possible selection. 

21. What are the timelines for applying to the B.Tech. program?

 Application portal will open a month or two prior to the declaration of the results of the JEE Advanced examination. For the current academic year, 2024-2025 the admission portal opened on May 01, 2025 and will remain open until June 06, 2025. 

22. Do I need to apply separately for the Four-Year Bachelor of Science (Research) and B. Tech. in Mathematics and Computing programs?

 Yes, an applicant needs to apply separately for the two programs. However, each individual need to register only once. Upon logging in there will be an option to apply for the two programs separately. 

23Do I need to update JEE Advanced results separately for the Four-Year Bachelor of Science (Research) and B. Tech. Mathematics and Computing programs?

 Yes! In case the result for the examination through which candidate is applying is not declared, follow the steps given below 

Select “JEE Advanced exam’’ from drop down in the application form. 

Choose option as “No” for the question “Examination result declared’’? 

click on the save button. Note: Applicant are required to provide information related to national entrance exam like Application no./Roll no. (as per the instruction given at admission portal), Rank, uploading of result card on or before closing of admission portal, by using the option of Update National Entrance Exam Result tab provided at applicant interface. 

24What are the different opportunities available to graduates from the B. Tech. program in Mathematics and Computing?

 Students from this program will be sought after as Master’s and Ph.D. students by academic institutions across the globe. There is a significant demand from the industry side as well. In particular, Bangalore being a tech hub can lead to several such opportunities. 

25What is the medium of instruction of the B.Tech. Program?

 English.

27. What are the hostel and mess facilities at IISc? Where will UG students be housed?

Nearly 3000 students, including about 500 girls, are housed in various hostels on campus. Two hostels, each of capacity 600, have been built recently. Girl students are housed in one of these hostels. UG boys in their first two years will be housed together in a single hostel. We currently have two messes that cater to the tastes of a variety of cuisines from different parts of India.
