Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bangalore offers its highly-competitive Full-Time International Programmes in research that leads to M.Tech (Research) in Engineering and Doctoral (Ph.D.) degrees in Science and Engineering.
Basic eligibility criteria
To be eligible to apply for the admission through this mechanism, you must be a foreign national, not holding an Overseas Citizenship of India. Indian citizens, holding an Indian passport (whether residing in India or abroad), need to apply through the regular admission process. Similarly, persons of Indian origin holding non-Indian passports, can apply for admission through the regular process of admission for Indian citizens, provided they hold an Overseas Citizenship of India as per section 7B(1) of the Indian Citizenship Act, 1955. In addition, they need to satisfy all the eligibility criteria for admission prescribed for Indian citizens.
Foreign students are eligible to apply for a Ph.D. programme in Science and Engineering or an M.Tech (Research) in Engineering programme. They are NOT eligible to apply for an integrated Ph.D. programme.
The citizens from Ethiopia, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, UAE, Nepal and Singapore are strongly encouraged to take the GATE International examination, being held at centers in these countries in the month of February. The GATE online application generally open in September every year for a month. If you are in India for your current education or employment, GATE examination can be taken in any of the centers in India.

- For Ph.D. programme: A Masters degree or a four-year undergraduate degree in an appropriate discipline. Departments offering a Ph.D. programme and their respective eligibility criteria are listed in this page.
- For M.Tech (Research) Engineering programme: A four-year undergraduate degree in an appropriate discipline. Departments offering a M.Tech (Research) Engineering programme and their respective eligibility criteria are listed in this page.
Application Procedure
- Applications must be submitted only through online mode
- Each applicant can select a maximum of 3 Departments/Centres.
- There is no application fee.

Required supporting documents
- Transcripts, degree certificate (if available) and three recommendation letters (on their professional letter heads or from their official Institutional email i.d.) from persons familiar with the academic credentials of the candidate.
- Strongly encouraged to submit (if available): GATE or GRE scores
Application Processing
- After ensuring completeness of your application form, it will be forwarded to the concerned Departments/Centres.
- If a Department screening committee shortlists you, a Departmental Committee will interview you using the web-based method.
- If you are currently in India, you are required to appear in person for the interview.
- If you are selected for a programme at the IISc, OIR will mail you the admission offer letter by end of April.
- Selected candidates will be required to join the Institute by August after completing all the necessary formalities.
Financial Support
If you are selected, you will be offered hostel accommodation and a fellowship by IISc. The fellowship amount will be equal to that offered to Indian students. This fellowship is usually adequate to pay tuition fees, hostel and mess fees and cover your living expenses.
